Aims of this Project:

The project aims 'to help promote and mainstream low carbon community living by securing media space and it's effective use by the low carbon community network'

Why we decided on this challenge:

This project maximises the effective use of the combined resources available to our group through a coordinated strategy that can be effectively implimented in the time scale available. It uses the contacts and reputation of the British Council to effect coordination of a response to climate change on several levels of scale, within local communities and between local communities through the virtual network using coordination provided by the Low Carbon Communities network. It also has the potential to work on an international scale if the model is adopted outside the UK. The project delivers on all the key project selection criteria outlined by the Low Carbon Future Advocates at the conference held in Birmingham.

Method:

Through this project, British Council climate advocates will seek to publicise Low Carbon Communities (LCCs) and mainstream the notion of joining them. We will do this by securing media publicity in the form of print, and if possible radio and film media, to promote the Low Carbon Communities Network. We aim to go from the local to the global scale, starting with local advertising organisations and using media types that require minimal production skills (e.g. print media), and moving towards national and more sophisticated media forms, such as television. This advertising media will be used to promote and mainstream the idea of joining a local low carbon community group. The content of the media will depend on the type of media, the demographic of the target audience and will also be tailored towards the particular needs of Low Carbon Community groups and networks. Broader promotion of the low carbon community concept will be used when the advertising space is likely to reach a national audience. In order to co-ordinate this content most effectively and ensure the long-term sustainability of the initiative beyond the current cohort of climate advocates, the aim is to engage with a low carbon community co-ordinating body.

Low carbon communities can be an invaluable source of knowledge and support for those wishing to make the first steps towards sustainability, and it is through those individuals that this project can make a deep impact. By targeting those who can be motivated to reduce their carbon footprint, the project not only achieves direct emissions reductions but also contributes to the wider challenge of a change in social norms by increasing the number of clued-up and concerned global citizens.
